I am becoming indifferent to The End records. Nothing they released in a few years strikes me as great, and I used to be a fanboy.

I've actually gone the other way with The End, granted having Voivod is always a good way to appease my demon. However when I saw these guys with Unexpect and The Gathering and they were the lowlight of the evening. For some reason they came off like yet another Neurosis-wannabe. (On another note, could all you Neurosis clones at least try and clone Souls at Zero, Enemy of the Sun and Through Sliver in Blood. Enough of the Times of Grace clones.)

Voivod aside, this is about the only The End release of late that I've enjoyed. I think - and I know this sounds stupid, but I do belive it has some merit - that they're shooting themselves in the foot signing bands with these god awful names. YES, it's the music that matters, but when you're a well-respected avant-garde metal label (scholomance, sculptured, novembers doom, etc.) and you start signing bands named Giant Squid, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Estradasphere (C.H.i.P.S, anyone?) and then 2 or those 3 bands (plus Unexpect) play some of the most ridiculous over-the-top non-music out there...what do you think your fanbase is going to think? If those 3 bands were the odd balls of the label, I'd probably say "cool! go for it" because they're worth hearing, but when Voivod and The Gathering are your "normal" acts...I dunno.

All that aside though, the production on this album is fantastic.
