Along with Incantation and Suffocation, Immolation have pretty much cornered the market on the NYDM sound. It's interesting to see these three bands start from a similar beginning and how they've grown apart, but retained the trademarks of the genre they created.
The latest Immolation, though full of jaw dropping guitar work [especially on the title track], is probably their most impressive listen to date, thanks to both crystal clear production and a panicked, claustrophobic vibe. Thankfully, they've also kept the frenzied drumming and dissonance that makes them so identifiable.
The production is very nice with an chalky feeling midrange to it. The only stumble is in the mix. Everything is going along smooth during verses and choruses, but when they try to add a lead guitar or something, it's usually just doubled and slapped on top of the rest of the mix without really integrating it into the track. Small gripe though for an album this good.
