Vortex, "Imminence of Death"
Vortex is metalcore from Canada. The "M" word really should cause me to hate this, if anything just out of habit. I don't however. In fact, I rather enjoy it. The guitars are great on this album and give this the feeling of hardcore mixed with Vehemence, if you can imagine that combination. Vortex also possesses a pretty tight rhythm section although they don't go off all that much. The tempo of the songs is a little on the fast side, although there is quite a bit of midrange material too. There are even a few nice breakdowns to satisfy the hardcore fan that might hear this. The production is crystal clear though not soulless preventing the album from sounding like a forty-minute exercise in self-gratification. The vocals are quite good with a death metal rasp combined with hardcore screaming. There are a few unfortunate moments where the vocals remind me John Tardy but they are few and far between. However you could at least tell there were always lyrics and not just random noises. There really isn't a lot I need to say about these guys, but I recommend them highly. Besides, if they can win over a hardcore hater like me, then those of you into this stuff should really love it.K.Huckins
