Village of Dead Roads, "Human Failures [split w/ Spiritu]"
Village of Dead Roads have some hard work to do to follow up what Spiritu did in the first half of this split. However they managed to get my attention loud and clear. These guys rock out a little more although they are in the same vein. The bass rumbles along nicely, complimented by some very solid drumming. The songs are pretty long, as these four songs take almost thirty minutes total. The guitar is not nearly as Sabbath as Spiritu, however it's still pretty damn good, thanks to an inspired solo or two. The vocals are a mixture of Crowbar-style gruff and some really good clean vocals. The tempo of the album is what really gives this life as it gets rather fast and aggressive at times, and slowing things to a nice spaced-out crawl. The last song is an 11 minute burst of fury that sounds like something High on Fire might've written for Blessed Black Wings. I'm not sure which side of this split I like more, but it's nice to see these two bands giving each other a dogfight for that title. I really need to take up drugs if my musical tastes continue down this avenue any further.K.Huckins
