Amoral, "Decrowning"

Amongst technical, melodic metal bands, there seems to be two types of bands: those that are technical first, then incorporate melodies a la Anata and those that are melodic, but happen to shred a la Arsis. Amoral, however, straddle this line on their second full-length effort, Decrowning.

Amoral play what could be called progressive melodic death thrash. Sometimes they take on a very regimented, calculated feel, while at other times they come off as a more progressive, free-flowing act. While being neither as technical as Anata, nor as melodic as Arsis, Amoral do a good job of keeping their technicality tasteful rather than over-the-top wankery and stray from powder-puff melodies, keeping the aggression flowing throughout.

On the whole, Decrowning is an enjoyable album for fans of both technical and melodic death metal, but isn't mind-blowing in either direction. Amoral are competent in all facets of their sound, but seem to be lacking that extra something that would help them earn a year-end-list-hopeful status.
