Impious, "Holy Murder Masquerade"
Impious return to my machines of noise for yet another foray into the crushing Swedish death/thrash that I admit to being terribly in love with. However they do so with a twist, namely a concept album. This is the story of a serial killer who wears the face of Jesus during his crimes. If the lyrics aren't enough to explain this the artwork doubles as a comic book that will get the point across. The art of the comic is really good too, I was surprised at how well it fits. They even begin and end the album with a couple of samples to let you know what is going on. In the middle you get a fake news report about the rampage of the main character. Enough about the story though the music however is why we are here. Musicially this album is something of a departure for Impious as the songs are more melodic than I remember them ever being. There is still plenty of speed and heaviness to sate the speed-crazed loonies such as myself, but there is a but more style and subtlety to it. Adding this dimension to the music along with the concept that unifies the song makes this a really different album for these guys. I still love Hellucinate and Terror Succeeds, but this actually stands out from the pack just a bit more. This isn't the most unique album I've ever heard, but I like how they took a step away from what they were, while remaining very much in touch with what got them where they are. I hope they keep up the good work on the next album, comic book included or not.K.Huckins
